Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. How old should my child be to start music lessons?
    A. It varies with the instrument and the child. Normally at:
    • 5 or 6 is a good time to start piano
    • 4 or 5 for Suzuki method violin lessons
    • 6 or 7 for cello
    • 14 or 15 for voice
    • 8 or 9 for flute

Best thing is to call us and discuss your child specifically.

  • Q. I am 43 and have always wanted to play the piano. Is it too late for me?

    A. No, it is never too late to learn music at any age. Your progress will not be slower either. Some years ago a cardiac specialist began piano with me. He was 65 years old, and started from scratch. He wanted to have a hobby for his retirement. Ten years later he received his ARCT diploma. Of course, he was used to working hard and applying himself. He was also well aware that all learning is hard, slow and took perseverance. But it paid off!!!

  • Q. We have no piano and cannot afford to buy one but we would like our 6 year old daughter to start lessons. Would you advise this?

    A. No. Nobody can learn anything by just doing it a few minutes a week. At first you might try arranging daily practice periods at a church. Or, an inexpensive keyboard perhaps. These can work for a few months but you must soon buy a piano. You can watch the newspaper for used ones and you can also investigate the rent-to-own plans some music stores have.

  • Q. Can you give me information on Associated Board examinations?

    A. Yes, lots. Call or e-mail us and we'll fill you in on the details.
