Violin Outreach Classes
Richmond Music School began a pilot project in September 2005 to teach violin lessons to ten student beginners in grades 3 to 7 at Walter Lee Elementary School. The lessons were low-cost, for two one hour sessions per week per child, for three terms of ten weeks each, with the violins loaned, at no charge to the students, for the duration of the classes.
The first year at Walter Lee was such a success a class was also begun at General Currie. With two years under its belt, the Walter Lee Ensemble has performed several times at its own school as well as at McNair Secondary School, Richmond Music School's Concerto Concert and at the Gateway Theatre.
A new rental policy necessitated a move of the Outreach classes in September 2007 to South Arm Community Centre and to the Richmond Music School. This move allowed the Music School to keep its Beginner Violin Outreach Classes at a rate of approximately $10 per hour per student. Classes are continuing at the Richmond Music School location for the 2010-2011 school year.
