Level 1 – Introduction to West African Drumming
Discover the joy of hand drumming in this engaging introductory course. Students learn fundamental playing techniques, including how to produce bass, tone, and slap sounds, while developing a solid understanding of traditional West African rhythms. No prior experience is necessary.
Level 2 – Developing Rhythm and Technique
Designed for students who have completed Level 1 or received instructor approval, this course builds on foundational skills. Each session introduces new djembé rhythms, offering fresh challenges and the opportunity to deepen your musical ability. Level 2 may be taken multiple times, as the repertoire changes with each offering.
Level 3 – Advanced Rhythms and Performance
For experienced drummers ready to tackle more complex rhythms, Level 3 offers a faster-paced and more demanding curriculum. As with Level 2, new material is introduced in each session, making it ideal for repeated enrollment. Instructor approval is required for admission.
Program Structure
Level 1 is typically completed once or twice. Levels 2 and 3 are designed for ongoing development and may be repeated multiple times. Student placement is determined by the instructor based on skill level and experience.

*Note: An annual membership charge of $50.00 per household applies beginning July 1 each year. Memberships registered after January 1 are prorated to $25.00. Summer session registration fees are prorated to $15.00. This membership is required prior to registration and before any lessons begin. Annual membership is effective from July 1 to June 30 for each academic year.
